Critics called on DA leader Mmusi Maimane to "fire" Helen for her controversial tweets.

Western Cape Premier and controversial tweeter Helen Zille caused an uproar on Twitter this morning, after essentially tweeting that colonialism wasn't all bad.

Clearly expecting a backlash, she told tweeters that she wasn't going to stick around to read their replies.

As expected many people were against her statements, going as far as to call for Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane to "fire" the premier:

The DA quickly distanced itself from the situation, with various MPs tweeting they do not share the same views as their former leader.

Eventually Helen tweeted an apology following the backlash from her initial statement.
