How do you find out if you're registered? Where do you need to go? And what should you take with you? We answer your municipal elections questions.

The municipal elections are almost upon us and this weekend you can register to cast your vote in the election.

Am I eligible to vote?

You can register as a voter from the age of 16 years but can only vote once you have turned 18. You need an ID document to vote and must be a South African citizen.

I’m not sure if I am registered

If you’ve registered to vote in the past but aren’t sure if your registration is still valid, follow this link and type in your ID number. You’ll be notified on screen if you’re registered and where you can vote.

You can also download the official election app by visiting the app store on your cellphone and searching for “IEC South Africa”, or send and SMS with your ID number to 32810. Each SMS costs R1,00.

When do I have to register again?

If you have moved, you have to register again because you have to cast your vote in the area where you live.

Where is my closest polling station or registration venue?

Visit this link to see where your nearest voting station or registration venue is. Simply type in your address.

What do I have to take with me when I register?

Remember to take your ID document, smart ID card or a valid temporary ID. You aren’t allowed to register with a driver’s licence or a certified copy of an official document.
