SA is in mourning over the tragic death of Joost van der Westhuizen.

The rugby legend died yesterday after a six-year-long battle with motor neuron disease. He was just 45 years old.

Tributes have poured in for the former Bok star on social media, but fans can be a part of a more intimate memorial for their hero.

"A public memorial service for Joost Heystek van der Westhuizen will be held at Loftus Versveld (Kirkness street, Pretoria) at 12h30pm on Friday 10 Feb 2017," Joost's J9 Foundation wrote on Facebook.

Confirming the sad news of the rugby legend’s death on Monday, the J9 Foundation said Joost’s family is “devastated at the loss”.

“This is a great loss to so many around the world and the family would like to extend their greatest gratitude for the love and support shown over this difficult time.”

“Joost fought a hard seven years with a failing body whilst his mind remained unaffected. Joost is survived by his two children, Jordan and Kylie, his parents, Gustav and Mariana as well as his two brothers, Pieter and Gustav and their families.”
