When John Seeley got a call on 15 January from Basil Lewis of the SPCA in Kimberley, he rushed off immediately to rescue another dog even though he was still on holiday. The man who became famous for rescuing a dog in Kimberly that he subsequently adopted says it's all in a day's work.

“If no one else wants to do it, I have to jump in, and when people need me I love to help,” John says. The pup, about two months old, was trapped in a storm water pipe. Evert Brand discovered the dog when he and his son Darryn and girlfriend Ilse Meyer were driving in McDougal Road, Kimberley, and saw a bitch and her pups running across the road. They stopped to get her and two her puppies out of the road when they heard another one barking. Evert soon realised the sound was coming from the storm water pipe.

With the help of the fire brigade they tried to rescue the young dog but to no avail.

John was phoned about 11pm and wasted no time in crawling into the pipe. “I don’t know whether it was 700 metres long as reported, but it was a reasonable distance.  I followed her but she kept running away from me because she was nervous. And it was difficult because I couldn’t run; I had to crawl on my hands and knees.

“In the end the pipe turned a corner and as I came around it I saw her lying there and I could grab her.  I suspect she was just tired,” says John, who still gets a kick out of every successful rescue operation he completes.

“It’s great, especially because I’m so fond of animals. It’s very special for me to rescue them and give them another chance in life. Like this time. I put in a bit of extra time, but the dog gets a whole life in exchange.”

According to John, it’s going well with Kimberleigh, the dog he rescued from the Big Hole last year and subsequently adopted.

“She’s a stunning dog. Everything about her is special and she gets on well with all our other dogs. The only crisis we have now is to keep her out of the swimming pool . . . She just loves swimming!”
