US President Barack Obama sends personally signed thank you letter after receiving YOU's special tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela

It’s not every day you get an envelope from the White House so imagine the excitement at Media24’s headquarters when an official stamped one arrived early in the new year.

Could it be true US President Barack Obama had really taken the time to personally sign a thank you letter after receiving our special Nelson Mandela tribute edition?

Turns out – yes.

The US president was one of the many world leaders who came to mourn with South Africans when Madiba passed away in December 2013. And he’s expressed great pleasure at receiving the 148-page commemorative magazine that was published by YOU and sister titles Huisgenoot and DRUM days after the great statesman’s death. “Thank you for your thoughtful gift,” he wrote to Media24 CEO Esmaré Weideman, former editor in chief of YOU, Huisgenoot and DRUM, who’d sent him copies of the magazine via various White House channels. “Please know I am touched by your warm gesture.”

He reiterated how much he’d admired our former president. “Nelson Mandela not only changed laws, but also hearts. His legacy makes me want to be better, and it was a singular honor to celebrate his life with the people of South Africa.”

The magazine, which covered every aspect of Madiba’s life from his birth and incarceration to his tumultuous love life and retirement with timelines, infographics and emotive photographs, was delivered to the White House by SA ambassador to the US Ebrahim Rasool.
