Hot air balloon accident leaves three seriously injured

Three people, including a toddler, was seriously injured in a hot air balloon accident in North West on Tuesday.

Early on Tuesday morning the Netcare2 helicopter was summonsed to assist the three people, including a young toddler, after the hot air balloon they were travelling in hit a tree. The incident happened near Buffelspoort Dam, a popular tourist destination in North West. According to reports from the scene at least 14 people were on board the hot air balloon when the accident happened.

The toddler was immediately transported by the Netcare2 helicopter to a hospital in Johannesburg to receive intensive care.

Netcare911 and Hartebeespoortdam EMS stabilised the other two people that suffered serious injuries at the scene. One of the injured is in a critical condition, while the other person's injuries are not so severe. Both were taken to a nearby hospital for medical care.

At this stage it is still unclear what caused the accident.
