How did I miss out on these cool shows?

Our TV blogger has discovered the series Chicago Fire and Banshee rather late and is kicking herself for not watching these from the beginning.

Why didn’t anyone tell me about the coolness that is Chicago Fire and Banshee? I’ve been missing out, and I always hope when I don’t know about a watchable series someone will tell me about it but clearly my friends don’t care enough about my TV needs.

So there I was flicking through channels last Tuesday while sorting out the laundry and idly wondering what to watch. I ended up on M-Net and caught part of an episode of Chicago Fire. I wasn’t paying much attention as I didn’t know who was who but I got drawn into it. So one of the hot firefighters (who’s played by the actor who’s dating Lady Gaga) working at this fire station is being targeted by an arsonist; he’s also not sure he’s the father of his girlfriend’s baby as she claims he is. Ooh! I can watch this stuff; it’s totally intriguing.

The channel information says this is the start of season two. The problem is I now have to catch up with about 24 episodes of season one as I hate not knowing 100 per cent who everyone is and what’s going on. But, of course, sigh, this means I’m going to fall further behind on the latest season. Plus the show is getting a spin-off, Chicago PD, which begins in America in January and we will see it after Chicago Fire here.

Then it happened again the following night. This time I was checking to see if the latest episode of So You Think You Can Dance had started on M-Net Series Reality and before I could even search I started watching part of an episode of Banshee on M-Net. Episode eight, I believe.

So the sheriff of the town called Banshee is actually the fake sheriff who’s taken over the life of the real dead sheriff . . . I want more! And who is this rather good-looking fake sheriff dude? Luckily The Husband had wanted to watch this series so it’s PVRed and I can get started in the holidays. Not watching this one is totally my own fault as I’d meant to check it out because it’s made by Alan Ball, who gave us True Blood. Oh, the actor Antony Starr is from New Zealand and hadn’t done much before getting this role. Interesting that, as Alan Ball hired another Kiwi actor, Anna Paquin, as the lead for True Blood. By the way, Banshee season two begins on 15 January on M-Net.

Missing out on shows has happened to me before, I ended up watching Band of Brothers and The Unit a while later after again seeing part of an episode. With those shows though my husband had told me they were worth watching and, of course, Band of Brothers was winning all sorts of awards, but I only became intrigued when I spotted Damian Lewis (Brody in Homeland) after becoming a fan of his other series, Life.

Actually it was rather fun bingeing on episodes rather than waiting for the next one each week, so you know where you can find me!

  • Chicago Fire season two is on M-Net on Tuesdays at 7.30 pm.
  • Banshee season one is on M-Net on Wednesdays at 10.03 pm.
