One of her daughters was due to be married yesterday.

Residents of a peaceful suburb in Katy, Texas, have been left stunned after a mother shot and killed her two daughters on Friday, 24 June.

The girls' father was also targeted in the shooting but managed to escape unharmed. According to investigators, the shooting was preceded by a family meeting between 42-year-old mom Christy Sheats her daughters Taylor (22) and Madison (17), and their father Jason (45). It was then that Christy pulled out a gun and shot her daughters as they attempted to escape the living room.

While Jason managed to escape down the cul-de-sac, Taylor ran into the street where she was followed by her mother who opened fire.

According to a witness, Christy, an outspoken gun activist, went back inside the house to reload her gun, only to return and shoot Taylor again.

The bride-to-be was air-lifted to the local hospital, where she later died.

The younger daughter was pronounced dead outside the home.

Friends and neighbours say the mom's shocking rampage was completely out of character.

Just months earlier, in September 2015, Christy posted a loving message to her children, US magazine People reports.

"Happy Daughter's Day to my two amazing, sweet, kind, beautiful, intelligent girls," she captioned photos of Taylor and Madison.

"I love and treasure you both more than you could ever possibly know." Some reports suggest that Christy may have had a history of mental illness. Although investigators haven't found the motive, they believe the shooting could be linked to what happened at the family meeting. “It was a family argument that turned into a shooting. But we’re still trying to put the pieces together,” said Troy Nehls, a Fort Bend County Sheriff.

The mother was killed after allegedly refusing to cooperate with the police’s request for her to drop her gun.

In reaction, a policeman linked to the Fort Bend police precinct shot and killed Christy.

She was declared dead on the scene.

According to Daily Mail Online Taylor had planned to marry her boyfriend of four years, Juan Sebastian Lugo in a small ceremony on Monday.

"Yall were part of our family, and that will never change," wrote grieving fiancé's sister, Maria on Facebook.

"The greatest in laws any one could ever have, and the sweetest, most wholesome and caring girls in my life.

"I look up to yall so much. Y'all were a light in the midst of this crazy world. We will love you two until the end of time."

According to several reports, Jason and Christy recently reconciled after being separated for a while. That fateful Friday was also his birthday.

He wasn’t hurt during the incident but was admitted to hospital for observation.

Shocked neighbours could only shake their heads in disbelief.

A neighbour, Fazz Zainuddin, said that it is heartbreaking to think that this happened to a "good family".

"This is not the Christy that I know. It's just not," Catherine Knowles, a friend told KTRK.

"When you meet her, you know she's a mom within the first minute," added Catherine.

"I thought it was the wrong person. It had to be."
