TEXT: Not happy with your kids eating meat? Maybe you’re wondering if and how you can get them to move to a vegetarian diet. We spoke to dietician Elise Barron about when and how you can get your child to become a vegetarian.

Is it safe for children to follow a vegetarian diet?

It’s safe for children to follow a vegetarian diet as long as they’re getting the right balance in their diet, meaning they should be getting enough protein from vegetarian sources. Protein is essential for a growing child as it helps with the development of hormones and builds muscle, among other things.

From what age can a child follow a vegetarian diet?

Children can start at any age, just as long as they’re getting enough nutrients from a balanced diet.

How can you adjust your child’s eating habits if you object to eating meat, but you don’t want to force them to be vegetarians?

Always offer a protein substitute, so instead of meat, eggs and so forth offer lentils and beans, fruits and vegetables, grains and legumes. Also make sure the whole family follows the same eating plan to make the transition easier.
