“Putting my own father in prison was the hardest thing I’ve ever done."

A brave 19-year-old from Bolton in north-western England says she feels she did 'the right thing' – even though it broke her heart to report her father to the police.

“Putting my own father in prison was the hardest thing I’ve ever done but it was the right thing to do,” Cora Patterson says.

A video that had been circulating on Facebook asking for information on two suspected burglars had caught the teenager’s eye. Not only did she recognise one person in the video – she recognised both.

One was her dad, Colin Patterson. The second person was her dad’s sister, her aunt Janine.

The two had broken into the home of pensioner Marlene Stott and stolen jewellery. Unfortunately for them they hadn’t reckoned with CCTV cameras.

“I felt so angry and ashamed and I posted their names and details on Facebook. I was devastated and I felt so bad for the people whose home he’d burgled. I felt at rock bottom,” Cora says.

“I sent my details to the homeowner and then I spoke to the police. Dad was arrested soon after.”

After his arrest Colin reportedly sent his daughter a text message saying he still loves her and that she shouldn’t feel guilty about what she’d done to him.

“I was panic-stricken at first, worrying that he was going to kill himself because I’d reported him,” Cora says.

But the sensible teen soon realised her dad’s message was just him being selfish and attention-seeking. “I certainly wasn’t the one who should be feeling guilty.”

Colin has 34 counts of burglary against him and is facing four years behind bars, so he won’t be there when Cora, who’s pregnant, gives birth to his first grandchild in four months’ time.

Janine’s is facing 30 months in jail.

Judge Timothy Stead, who presided over Colin and Janine’s case, has only the highest praise for Cora’s actions. “It does take some serious courage to do that. As far as I’m concerned, she should be commended.”
