A family have broken a world record by installing more than half a million Christmas lights on their house.

The Richards family of Canberra, Australia, have put up an incredible 502 165 lights on their abode and in their garden to reclaim the Christmas lights record they held in 2011 but lost last year to a New York family.

Dad David Richards told the Canberra Times newspaper: "It was sort of a reason to do it again and they didn't break it by very much.

“I thought 500 000 was a nice, round number so I decided to go all out because I may never do it again."

The family pay an incredible £1 400 per month for the lights, which have resulted in more than 48 kilometres of cables around their house.
