Joan Rivers died after a “predictable complication” during a medical procedure.

The legendary comedienne passed away on September 4 at the age of 81 during routine throat surgery. On Thursday, The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner released its findings after an initial autopsy proved “inconclusive”.
'Death resulted from a predictable complication of medical therapy'

“The classification of a death as a therapeutic complication means that the death resulted from a predictable complication of medical therapy,” the Office of Chief Medical Examiner explained to Fox News.

The complication caused a loss of oxygen that led to brain damage the statement on her cause of death added. It went on to reveal that the Fashion Police host visited Yorkville Endoscopy on August 28 for a laryngoscopy and an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and she was put under propofol sedation to evaluate changes to her voice.

The State Department of Health launched an investigation into the practice following the star’s death. The clinic parted ways with its medical director, Dr. Lawrence Cohen, shortly after Joan died there.

The news comes after Jay Leno opened up about why he never had Joan on the Tonight Show during his time as host.

“I didn't want to do it while [former host] Johnny [Carson]was alive out of respect for Johnny," he told Access Hollywood. "I don't think he wanted to see her on the show and that's why we didn't do it."

Johnny had reportedly fallen out with Joan and created the ban, but after he died in 2005, Jay felt it was too awkward to rectify the situation.

“Joan was sort of going on and on about me, and I thought, 'Let's let the ground lie fallow for a while and see what happens,' but she always kind of kept it going. And I like Joan. I mean that was the first autograph I ever got was Joan Rivers,” he said. “I'm a comedian, I went to see her at the Chateau De Ville in Framingham and we were friends, and by then it just got to be awkward and we just never did it."
