Johnny Depp's daughter asked him to "cut out the voices" when he used to play Barbies with her.

The 51-year-old actor was two children with his ex-partner Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose and Jack. Lily-Rose is now 15 and has shot her first movie, with Johnny quizzed on whether he gave her any acting lessons.

'I used to test characters on her, playing Barbies'

"I think probably the closest thing was playing Barbies with me when she was little. We played a lot of Barbies, my daughter and I. I used to test characters on her, playing Barbies. Willy Wonka, Captain Jack, there was another one I can't remember which one but one day we were playing and she just decided to go, 'Daddy, just do it normal. Like cut out the voices.' And that was the day I stopped playing Barbies," he told US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

Lily-Rose's film is called Yoga Hosers and it's directed by Kevin Smith. It's about two teenage yoga fanatics who have to battle an evil presence and Johnny was stunned when he saw his daughter on set. He admits being a bit worried about the whole thing at first, but all that vanished when he witnessed her in character.

"She's just made her first film with her best friend from kindergarten, with Kevin Smith directing. I was nervous for her until I saw about three seconds of her in a scene - she's amazing," he said. "Would I coach her if she was absolutely talentless? No I wouldn't... 'That was great baby!' Both girls did well."

The star also confirmed he has a unique way of acting, as he plays music through headphones when saying his lines. It helps him get a handle on his characters, although that's not always needed.

Johnny was famously good friends with late writer Hunter S. Thompson and has brought several of his books to the big screen, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Hunter led a wild life, but that didn't stop Johnny from introducing him to his family.

The writer even held Lily-Rose when she was a baby, with the actor assuring the audience things went fine.

"It was OK because the LSD was in his pocket," he joked.
