Joy in tears & smiles

It was the day she’d been talking about for months so family and friends weren’t surprised that everything looked perfect when they arrived for Redi Direko’s wedding.

The church was decked out with beautiful flower arrangements, tranquil music played in the background and the groom, Brian Tlhabi, was dashing in a smart black suit.

But unbeknown to the 400 guests, behind the scenes things were anything but calm as the bubbly TV and radio presenter rushed to get ready and her friends scrambled to retrieve her wedding ring that was locked inside a car.

They couldn’t get the car open and with the clock ticking they finally resorted to smashing a window to get the ring.

Five minutes later Redi made her grand entrance at the Church of Our Lady of Lebanon in Mulbarton, south of Johannesburg, looking radiant in a flowing cream gown with her hair swept into an elegant bun.

But halfway down the aisle the emotion of the big day got too much for her and tears started streaming down her cheeks.

When she arrived at the altar Brian, a Soweto doctor whom she has dated for four years, placed a comforting arm around her waist but throughout the ceremony the tears kept flowing as they exchanged vows.

Then they moved on to the nearby four-star Thaba Ya Batswana hotel for their reception where guests, including Generations actress Phemelo Motene and power couple Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo, were treated to a buffet and speeches.

As soon as the dancing kicked off the newlyweds were all smiles as they partied with friends late into the night.

With the festivities over they still had plenty to look forward to as they prepared to travel to France on a romantic 10-day honeymoon.

When they return 702 and Cape Talk listeners can look forward to hearing the popular presenter’s familiar voice on air.

But she’ll be known by a different name – Redi Tlhabi.

Friend and colleague Aki Anastasiou says Redi was determined to take Brian’s surname because she feels honoured to be his wife.

“It would be hard to find a couple who are more devoted to each other,” Aki adds.

“Every time she speaks about him her eyes light up. Even when she gets an SMS from him she jumps for joy.”
