Convicted murderer Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye and his co-accused have now been found guilty of culpable homicide.

Convicted murderer  Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye  and his co-accused have now been found guilty of culpable homicide. The South Gauteng High Court on Wednesday overturned Jub Jub's four murder charges, finding him guilty of culpable homicide instead, with a reduced sentence of  eight years in prison.

Although it's been four years few can forget the horror of  the events of  30 March 2010.  Jub Jub and Themba Tshabalala were both driving Mini Coopers down Mdlalose Street in Soweto, a busy stretch of road  kids often use to get to and from school. Racing down the street they ploughed into a group of boys.

Four died at the scene; two were taken to hospital and survived, although both have brain damage. Drugs and alcohol were suspected – Jub Jub tested positive for drugs, Tshabalala for both.

Jub Jub and Tshabalala were each sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Protea Magistrate's Court last year. Jub Jub's petition to appeal was filed in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg in March 2013. This after his bid to appeal his murder conviction and sentence was denied in the Protea Magistrate's Court in February of that year.

Social media is abuzz with commentary of the verdict with many speculating that it was Judge Thokozile Masipa's verdict in the Oscar Pistorious murder trial that swayed the decision in Jub Jub's case.

In an interview with a weekly magazine in 2012,  Jub Jub insisted he was innocent. “I’m ready to go to jail,” he said at the time.  “But to be honest I still don’t know what I did wrong.

"All I know is I was involved in a car accident. I’ve taken a lot of insults, been judged too many times, been written off, told how useless I am – even my own baby mama called me a murderer (Kelly Khumalo).

"Enough is enough. People think I’m not remorseful but what do they expect me to do when I’m also the victim here?”
