Kate Winslet's villainous alter ego didn't scare her kids.

The British actress plays poisonous Jeanine in the Divergent franchise, based on the books by Veronica Roth, with second instalment Insurgent hitting cinema screens later this month.

Kate's wicked character didn't come home with her though, as she admits Jeanine would have little effect on her older kids Mia (14) and 11-year-old Joe.

'I'm their mum, and they're never scared of me'

"I'm their mum, and they're never scared of me! So, no, the crazy act didn't work on them," Kate laughed to People magazine.

Kate also has 15-month-old son Bear, who was her first child with third husband Ned Rocknroll.

Things couldn't be better with the star both on the work front and at home.

"We've all got our health and we all laugh a lot. In my personal life, I really can't say why, but I've never felt more confident and happy," she gushed.

"My creative life in the last few years has been really, really, colourful for me. And I've really, really enjoyed being able to embrace that. I have a wonderful man in my life who is so incredibly supportive that makes it possible for me to have those experiences. It's been a really fun time."

Next up Kate can be seen in crime drama Triple 9 alongside Aaron Paul, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Woody Harrelson.

But for now her offspring can't wait to catch her opposite Shailene Woodley and Theo James in Insurgent.

"They do very much have an opinion on what I do and don't do these days. [When I was asked to do Divergent they said] 'Yeah, mum, you should definitely do it!' The idea that their mum would play this baddie was incredibly exciting," she revealed.
