MATERIALS Elle Kidz (50 g balls) – 3 (4; 4) balls Periwinkle 222 (for set); 4 buttons; one pair each 3,25 mm and 4 mm knitting needles. MEASUREMENTS To fit ages 0-3 (3-6; 6-12) months. Actual all-round measurement of garment: chest 46 (51; 55) cm; length to shoulder 20 (24; 29) cm; sleeve length: 15 (17; 20) cm. The instructions are given for the smallest size with the larger sizes in brackets; where only one figure is given it applies to all sizes. TENSION Save time, take time, check tension; 21 sts and 40 rows = 10 cm over garter stitch using 4 mm needles. For best results it is essential to obtain the correct tension. If there are too few sts on test swatch use thinner needles; if there are too many sts use thicker needles. STITCHES USED Garter stitch K every row. Stocking stitch 1st row: RSF, k. 2nd row: P. Rep these 2 rows. IMPORTANT NOTE If you want the stripe patterns to match up on the fronts of the garment and the bootees make sure you start knitting at the same point in the colour sequence. CARDIGAN BACK Using 4 mm needles, cast on 48 (54; 58) sts and cont straight in gst (see Stitches used) and when work measures 20 (24; 29) cm from beg, ending with a WSR, shape shoulders: Cast off 8 (9; 9) sts at beg of next 4 (4; 2) rows, then 0 (0; 10) sts at beg of foll 2 rows = 16 (18; 20) sts. Cast off rem sts for back neck opening. RIGHT FRONT FOR BOY/LEFT FRONT FOR GIRL Using 4 mm needles, cast on 26 (29; 31) sts and cont straight in gst and when work measures 16 (20; 25) cm from beg, ending with a WSR for right front and RSR for left front, shape neck*Cast off 4 (5; 6) sts at beg (neck edge) of next row, k to end. Next row: K. Next row: K 1, k 2 tog, k to end. Next row: K to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1. Rep last 2 rows once more. Next row: K 1, k 2 tog, k to end. Next row: K. Next row: K 1, k 2 tog, k to end = 16 (18; 19) sts. Cont straight and when work measures same as back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with a RSR for right front and WSR for left front, shape shoulder: Cast off 8 (9; 9) sts at beg of next row = 8 (9; 10) sts. K one row, then cast off rem sts to complete shoulder slope. Place markers along front edge, first one on 11th row and last one 4 rows below beg of neck shaping, and the rem two evenly spaced between. LEFT FRONT FOR BOY/RIGHT FRONT FOR GIRL Using 4 mm needles, cast on 26 (29; 31) sts and k 10 rows. Boys only: Next row, buttonhole row: K to last 5 sts, cast off 2 sts, k 2. Next row: K, casting on 2 sts over buttonhole. Girlsonly: Next row, buttonhole row: K 2, cast off 2 sts, k to end. Next row: K, casting on 2 sts over buttonhole. Both: Cont straight, working buttonholes as before to correspond with markers and when work measures 16 (20; 25) cm from beg, ending with a RSR for left front and WSR for right front, shapeneck as for right front for a boy and left front for a girl from * to end. SLEEVES  BOTH ALIKE Using 4 mm needles, cast on 34 (34; 36) sts and cont in gst, inc 1 st at each end of every foll 12th (8th; 8th) row 3 (3; 2) times, then every foll 10th row 2 (4; 6) times = 44 (48; 52) sts. Cont straight until work measures 15 (17; 20) cm from beg, ending with a WSR. Cast off all sts. TO MAKE UP Sew shoulder seams. Place a marker 11 (12; 13) cm on either side of shoulder seams. Fold sleeves in half lengthways then, placing folds on shoulder seams, sew sleeves into position between markers. Sew up side and sleeve seams. Block garment to measurement, cover with a damp cloth and allow to dry. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. BEANIE Using 4 mm needles, cast on 79 (83; 91) sts and cont in st st until work measures 12 (13; 14) cm from beg, ending with a RSR. Next row, inc row: P one row, inc 0 (2; 0) sts evenly across row = 79 (85; 91) sts. Shape crown: 1st row: K 1, (k 2 tog, k 4) 13 (14; 15) times = 66 (71; 76) sts. 2nd and every alt row: P. 3rd row: K 1, (k 2 tog, k 3) 13 (14; 15) times = 53 (57; 61) sts. 5th row: K 1, (k 2 tog, k 2) 13 (14; 15) times = 40 (43; 46) sts. 7th row: K 1, (k 2 tog, k 1) 13 (14; 15) times = 27 (29; 31) sts. 9th row: K 1, (k 2 tog) 13 (14; 15) times = 14 (15; 16) sts. 10th row: (P 2 tog) 7 (7; 8) times, p 0 (1; 0) st = 7 (8; 8) sts. Break yarn, thread through rem sts, pull up tightly and fasten off. TO MAKE UP Sew back seam. Block to measurement, cover with a damp cloth and allow to dry. BOOTEES BOTH ALIKE Using 3,25 mm needles, cast on 23 (27; 31) sts. 1st row: K. 2nd row: K 1, m1, k 10 (12; 14) sts, m1, k 1, m1, k 10 (12; 14) sts, m1, k 1 = 27 (31; 35) sts. 3rd, 5th and 7th row: K. 4th row: K 1, m1, k 11 (13; 15) sts, m1, k 3, m1, k 11 (13; 15) sts, m1, k 1 = 31 (35; 39) sts. 6th row: K 1, m1, k 12 (14; 16) sts, m1, k 5, m1, k 12 (14; 16) sts, m1, k 1 = 35 (39; 43) sts. 8th row: K 1, m1, k 13 (15; 17) sts, m1, k 7, m1, k 13 (15; 17) sts, m1, k 1 = 39 (43; 47) sts. Work 8 (10; 12) rows gst. Shape instep: 1st row: K 23 (26; 29) sts, k 2 tog, turn. 2nd row: Sl 1, k 7 (9; 11) sts, k 2 tog, turn. Rep 2nd row 10 (12; 14) times more = 27 (29; 31) sts. Next row: Sl 1, k to end. Next row: K. Work 4 rows gst. Cont as folls: 1st row: K 1, *p 1, k 1, rep from * to end. 2nd row: *P 1, k 1, rep from * to last st, p 1. Rep 1st and 2nd row once more. Work 18 (20; 22) rows gst. Cast off all sts. TO MAKE UP Sew seam, reversing seam for fold-over. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to dry.
