Afrikaans singer Kurt Darren’s shows are being cancelled or postponed in the wake of his accident yesterday.

Kurt Darren is in great pain, even more than yesterday, his brother Darren van Heerden told YOU this morning. “Kurt is doing well but he’s in terrible pain,” the popular singer’s brother said. “He’s in even more pain than yesterday.”

Darren said Kurt’s wife, Dunay, who was celebrating her 30th birthday on a pleasure boat with her mom and aunt, cried when she heard about her husband’s motor car accident.

“Dunay wanted to return but Kurt told her to stay and enjoy the rest of her holiday, which was a birthday gift from him. Her birthday was on 29 June.”

Kurt and two friends, Marnus Bisschoff and Nadia van Rensburg, were involved in a motor car accident in the early hours of Sunday. Their Toyota Fortuner left the road and ended up in a riverbed. Kurt was flown by helicopter to the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg after it was initially feared he’d broken his back. The accident took place a few kilometres from his house in Pretoria.

Kurt broke eight ribs and suffered bleeding on the lungs,

Marnus broke his jaw and suffered serious back injuries, and Nadia broke her right leg.

About 16 hours ago Dunay tweeted, “Thank you for every person’s prayers and messages and one BIG THANK YOU to our Heavenly Father for sparing my husband, Marnus and Nadia. Xx”

It’s not clear what her immediate plans are or when she’ll be returning home.

Louis van Wyk, Kurt’s manager and friend, says “heaps” of Kurt’s shows have had to be cancelled. “So far about 20 shows have been cancelled,” Louis said from the Natal South Coast, where he’s on holiday.

“Kurt has bleeding on the lungs. He’ll be out of action for at least six weeks. We’re waiting for the medical team to advise us as to how long he will be out of action. Hopefully they will be able to give us clarity today. The clients are phoning us from everywhere – everyone wants to know when he can perform again. We’ll have to talk to the doctors before we’ll know precisely how many shows and until when we’ll have to cancel shows or postpone them.”

Kurt is one of the artists who was meant to perform at the Huisgenoot Skouspel in Cape Town this coming Saturday.
