She thought the blood coming from her nose was the result of a fall from a motor scooter while she was visiting South East Asia. Little did Daniela Liverani (24), of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, realise that the cause of the bleeding was a leech that had made its home in her nose for a month. Last Thursday she realised with a shock while showering that the dark object in her nose was a living creature. She’d been under the impression that it was a blood clot.

'Whenever the doctor grabbed him I could feel him tugging at the inside of my nose'

“I jumped out of the shower, demisted the mirror and saw little ripples on him.”

She rushed to hospital where a doctor removed the leech with a pair of tweezers.

“It was agony; whenever the doctor grabbed him I could feel him tugging at the inside of my nose. Then all of a sudden, after half an hour, the pain stopped and the doctor had the leech in the tweezers. He was about as long as my forefinger and as fat as my thumb.”

Daniela took the leech, which she’d named “Mr Curly”, home in a bottle but it was dead the next day.

She suspects the leech entered her nose while she was touring Vietnam and Cambodia in August.

“Mr Curly is now in a municipal dustbin somewhere,” Daniela says. “But I boiled him first.”
