Lena Dunham’s relationship with her sister is the most important one in her life.

Lena Dunham’s relationship with her sister is the most important one in her life.

The 28-year-old actress has a close friendship with her 22-year-old sibling Grace. But Lena acknowledges that while she loves her sister more than anything, things can often be “complicated” between them. “My sister is the most important relationship in my life, yet it’s also very complicated,” she told Stylist magazine while editing the latest issue. “I find out how other sisters have navigated the complexities of sisterhood.” Lena went on to discuss her connection to her sister and how their relationship has changed over the years. The Girls creator said it was her decision to invite Grace on her recent book tour that really solidified their friendship as adults and intellectual equals.

‘I’ve always felt deeply connected to Grace, as if we are tied together in an eternal three-legged race’

“I’ve always felt deeply connected to Grace, as if we are tied together in an eternal three-legged race,” Lena wrote. “But I have never felt closer to her than I do now that she’s graduated from university and we’re working as a team.

“I’ve always admired Grace’s intellect, humour and style. But as I began to prepare for my book tour I realised I NEEDED her. She is socially conscious, intellectually rigorous and intuitive. I knew she was the only person to bring the social action aspect of my tour to life.”

Lena also revealed that Grace’s involvement in her book tour has given her a whole new outlook on her sister.

“When I work alongside her it stirs something pretty primal,” she explained. “I squeezed those cheeks! I changed that diaper! I cut that kid’s hair without permission! And we grew up to be collaborators with a shared belief in community action, women’s rights and yes, hamburgers.”

And the feeling is quite clearly mutual, with Grace adding to the magazine: “Lena is my first and last bed-buddy, my role model and teacher, my collaborator in things little and big.”
