It could be the next Twilight. The movie version of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling book The Hunger Games has just hit local cinemas and fans are flocking to see Katniss and co fight to the death in the arena.

In case you haven’t read the book (the first in a trilogy), here’s the drill: Panem is what’s left of America after an apocalyptic disaster.

The country is divided into 12 districts and each year a male and female “tribute” from each district are chosen to take part in The Hunger Games, which are televised live.

The tributes must hunt and kill each other until only one remains – then he or she is assured of lifelong riches and fame.

Our heroine is Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a resourceful 16-year-old who lives in the poorest district and has to hunt everyday to keep her family fed. Her best friend is fellow hunter Gale (Liam Hemsworth).

When her 12-year-old sister, Prim (Willow Shields), is chosen to take part in the Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place and gets sent to the Capitol along with male tribute, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), with whom she has a complicated past.

Critics have praised the film and it’s already made $460 million (R3,6 billion) worldwide.
