Professor Jonathan Jansen, rector of the University of the Free State, taught students some valuable lessons in this week’s episode of MySchool Dream School SA on M-Net and Mzansi Magic. And not just about DNA, the subject he covered in his life sciences class. At the end of the lecture he also shared a few life lessons with them.

Self-confidence

Believe in yourself. Don’t allow others to intimidate you – you’re clever enough to be allowed to express your opinion. Your friends, family and even teachers are all on your side to encourage you – believe you can make a success of your school career.

You are not a victim

Stop playing the role of victim. Everyone has challenges in their lives, be they physical handicaps, financial problems or difficult circumstances at home. You’re going to have to fight for what you want from life; nobody’s going to feel sorry for you.

Grab your opportunities

If you see a gap, take it. You have the potential to be highly successful; you just need to see the opportunities around you. Oprah Winfrey, one of the world’s most successful people, has herself said she’s where she is today because she spotted the opportunities around her.

Don’t give up hope

Walt Disney once said: Never, never, never, never give up. Even if the world makes you believe you will never escape your circumstances, don’t give up. Work hard and bite the bullet. And ask yourself the question “Do I want to be here for the rest of my life or do I want to get out of here so that I can make a difference?”

Former president Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful tool you can use to change the world.” But it’s also the most powerful way you can change yourself.
