Lindsay Lohan is “out of her league” on London’s West End, according to one critic. The actress made her official stage debut on Thursday’s opening night of Speed-the-Plow, following weeks of bumpy preview performances. And it appears theatergoers aren’t being too kind in their reviews, with one describing her as being too unseasoned to play secretary Karen in the David Mamet satire, according to BBC News.

'While at first her desperation not to mess up was almost tangible, with the help of the leading men she eased into it'

UK newspaper The Daily Mirror noted Lindsay needed a line cue, although the reporter wasn’t altogether disappointed.

"But showing she's a true professional, the redhead pulled it back to complete a successful performance in front of an audience of critics… Yes, at points she seemed a little overenthusiastic, but she did it. And while at first her desperation not to mess up was almost tangible, with the help of the leading men she eased into it,” the reviewer contended.

Others weren’t quite as harsh.

Dominic Cavendish of UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph gave Lindsay three out of five stars.

"The doomsayers, the mockers and those quick to…[complain] on Twitter can go hang,” he wrote, arguing that the actress showed "a surprising - and smoldering - degree of style".

“Yes, her flat delivery needs more work, but so does the rest of the show,” he continued.

Paul Taylor, a critic for UK newspaper The Independent, also gave Lindsay three out of five stars.

“[S]he has real presence as a gauche, husky-voiced operator who keeps you guessing as to how far she goes around using her idealistic naivete and wide-eyed questions… as a stalking horse for naked ambition,” he wrote.

“A good but by no means a great night out whose value does not depend on the swirl of publicity occasioned by the female lead,” he concluded.

Simon Edge for the Express was also forgiving.

"A husky Lohan doesn't look especially confident on stage - how would she, given the burden of negative expectation? But on press night she only needed one prompt..." he wrote.

Speed-the-Plow will continue its run at the Playhouse Theatre through November 29.
