The 5-year-old boy was reportedly forced to run several kilometres in the early hours of the morning, clothed only in his underwear and socks.

A five-year-old boy was found dead by a canal in northern France yesterday after allegedly being punished for wetting the bed, according to reports.

Mirror Online reports the boy, known only as known as Yanis, was forced to run several kilometres in the early hours of the morning, clothed only in his underwear and socks, before suffering a cardiac arrest.

The boy was reportedly forced to run along the canal while his stepfather followed closely on a bike.

The Sun reported that his stepfather made a call for emergency services after the child collapsed several kilometres from their home in  Aire-sur-la-Lys, near St Omer.

The suspicion conditions in which the child was found led police to believe that the boy had suffered physical abuse the evening before he died, Kidspot reported.

Patrick Leleu, prosecutor of the Republic of Saint-Omer, told press that upon a medical examination, results revealed that the boy died from “various injuries to the skull, consistent with some falls, some not".

The stepdad (30) and mother (22) were both arrested on charges of assault.

The couple, who had been married since 2015, were both unemployed and had no other children.

Police told Le Persien, the French local newspaper, that the investigation will further be used to determine the initial cause of death.
