Police have launched an investigation into the death of a 5-year-old girl who died after her head was trapped in a lift.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to the double-story home in Weymouth, on Thursday afternoon to reports of a young girl with a head injury.

“Once the lift was stabilised, the child was removed using small specialist cutting equipment,” said a spokesman for Dorset fire and rescue service.

Despite efforts from the emergency services, Alexis Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two-story house is equipped with disabled ramp outside. The lift was reportedly installed as a disability aid.

It is believed Alexis got her head stuck in a lift used to move a wheelchair between the ground and top floor of the property.

Tributes have since been left on social media sites for the little girl who has been described as "a little princess".

One neighbour said, “I am devastated, they are a kind, loving family.”
