Local man turns bizarre booze-chugging craze on it's head

It's like a worldwide game of 'truth or dare' which sees teens, students and even some adults 'NekNominating' - challenging - each other to down whole drinks in bizarre ways. Then the nominee posts their crazy video online, and is allowed to nominated friends to do the same. But when Alberton's Brent Lindeque's turn came, he decided he was going to change the rules.

It's like a worldwide game of 'truth or dare' which sees teens, students and even some adults 'NekNominating' - challenging - each other to down whole drinks in bizarre ways. Then the nominee posts their crazy video online, and is allowed to nominate friends to do the same.

"I neknominate you," has become the catch-phrase littering newsfeeds all over the world. "You have 24 hours. Good luck."

The trend has snowballed, and in a bid to outdo their peers, nominees have taken to doing hardcore drugs, drinking petrol, and throwing themselves into rivers. Two deaths have been attributed to the craze.

But when Alberton's Brent Lindeque's turn came, he decided he was going to change the rules.

"As you know this NekNomination thing's doing the rounds," Brent says in his video - which already has over 240 000 views on  YouTube - from behind the driver's seat of his car. "I'm going to show you how South Africans do it better. Keep watching." He pulls up at a traffic light, and hands a beggar at the intersection a sandwich, a coke and a chocolate. He then nominates two of his friends to do the same. "Downing a can of Castle Light is easy... imagine if we all harnessed the power of social media to make a real difference in peoples lives," he explains on YouTube.
