Love at first breath for these 21st-century Romeo and Juliet babies

There couldn't have been a more perfect moment than when a modern-day Juliet was placed alongside her sleeping Romeo, shortly after each took their first breath.

When it comes to fate, there couldn't have been a more perfect moment than when a modern-day Juliet was placed alongside her sleeping Romeo, shortly after each took their first breath.

Little Romeo Hernandez was born to proud parents Edwin and Morgan Hernandez on 19 March at exactly 2.06 pm. In the room next door, precisely 18 hours and eight minutes later, Christiana and Allan Shifflett welcomed their bundle of joy, Juliet.

Despite the tiny tots being delivered by the same doctor, both couples were blissfully unaware of each other and the coincidence that would befall them.

It wasn’t until photographer Cassie Clayshulte moved between the rooms to snap the newborns that the coincidence was discovered.

"Halfway through shooting Romeo it took me a minute to put it together how neat this was and how rare of a coincidence this was,” she told TODAY.

"It's Romeo and Juliet without the tragedy part and with love instead.”

But neither couple had Shakespeare in mind when they named their little ones.

Edwin and Morgan drew inspiration from their favourite singer-songwriter, American Romeo Santos, while Christiana and Allan drew inspiration from a television show.

“We wanted a 'J' name to go with our son’s name, Jonas,” Christiana explained.

“We picked Juliet because we were watching the TV show Psych and the character’s name is Jules.”

Albeit totally unrelated to the celebrated playwright's historic piece, our hearts can’t help but melt at the pictures of the tiny "star-crossed lovers".

Their parents are so thrilled about the occurrence they’ve set out a reunion for the duo’s first birthday.

Best of all? It’s going to be a Shakespearean-themed party.
