Love is in the air

The tension in the office is so thick you could cut it with a knife. On one side is a man wondering if he’ll ever be able to confess his love for the beauty with the almond-shaped eyes. On the other is a woman who has to look away when she catches his eye so he can’t see how much she longs for him.

Sjoe, sounds like something from a Mills & Boon novel! But Isidingo fans will know we’re talking about the attraction between former mine manager Vusi Moletsane and business school graduate Lesedi Moloi. Sparks have been flying between them and viewers of the SABC3 soap can’t wait to see if they’ll give in to their feelings.

“You’ll just have to stay tuned to see what happens,” says Gugu Zuma, the actress who plays Lesedi.

Gugu just smiles when we plead to know more – but her lips are sealed. There are no airs and graces about the 25-year-old despite the fact she’s the daughter of SA’s No 1 citizen.

When Meshack Mavuso, who plays Vusi, arrives he’s dressed for “Football Friday” in a Bafana shirt and jeans.

He was taken aback when he heard he was going to work with the Jacob Zuma’s daughter. “I thought we were going to have a prima donna on our hands, with bodyguards on set.” Ironically he walked right past her on her first day on set, not knowing who she was.

It has been almost a year since Gugu joined the soap. She’s getting used to people recognising her. “I guess I have to deal with it. I signed up for it.”

Meshack loves being on the show. “Being a home-brewed product is our winning formula. Viewers identify with the story-lines and characters.”

Time will tell if Vusi can be as lucky, Meshack says. “After Lettie died he tried to find love but it didn’t happen. But with Lesedi it’s been a long time coming,” he says. “She could be the one.”
