André P Brink pays tribute to Nelson Mandela.

NOVELIST

Shortly before the elections in 1999 he invited me to tea at [official residence of the president in Cape Town] Genadendal. It was unforgettable because of the kindly, understanding way in which he spoke about the soft spot he had for the Afrikaners. He insisted on speaking Afrikaans for much of the conversation. He had the quality that I think many really great people have of making you feel, even if you have only one minute to spend with him, that for that one minute you’re the most important person in his life.
