A man of Florida in the US who’d been drinking bit his mother’s Shih Tzu dog so violently the animal’s eye was ripped out of its cage, police say.

Police in Palm Beach were called to a veterinary hospital in the early hours of Friday to investigate a charge of cruelty to animals.

When they arrived they found the Shih Tzu, Cujo, with one eye hanging from its socket. Police say Cujo’s owner told them her son, David Etzel (36), had been drinking and started teasing the dog.

According to the arrest report Etzel grabbed the dog by the throat and picked it up. The dog bit him in the face and Etzel bit back. When he lowered the dog his mother could see the dog’s eye hanging from its socket, the report says.

The owner’s other son woke up and accompanied her when she took the two-year-old dog to the veterinarian.

The vet told police the animal had suffered the kind of trauma she sees when a dog is hit by a car or attacked by another dog. She said judging by the severity of its injuries the attack on the Shih Tzu must have been very violent, the report states.

Police say they found Etzel fast asleep in his home in Lake Worth. He told officials Cujo had bitten him but that he wouldn’t have hurt the dog.

He’s being charged with cruelty to animals.
