A wedding ring is usually a symbol of commitment for everlasting love, but for a man from a rural area in Limpopo it meant unspeakable pain when an attempt to increase his sexual pleasure went horribly wrong.

In the latest edition of the South African Medical Journal, a team of doctors from the casualty department at the Van Velden hospital in Tzaneen relayed a horrific tale of penile strangulation.

Doctors had to help ease the pain of a 28 year-old man, who arrived at the Limpopo hospital with a wedding ring at the middle section of his erect penis.

Accompanied by his mother, he showed the doctors his severely swollen and blue penis. He was in excruciating pain, but his vital signs were normal.

The man, whose wife had recently had a baby, told the doctors that his friends recommend putting the ring on his penis for erotic reasons.

He was immediately taken to the casualty section, where the swelling proved so excessive that two attempts at removing the ring safely failed.

The doctors finally adopted a method of multiple punctures with a syringe and a needle on the swollen area and managed to remove the ring successfully.

He was admitted to the hospital and treated with antibiotics and analgesia, but within three days he recovered completely and was discharged.

He returned for a check-up a month later and the doctors found that he had recovered fully.
