Her parents, Martin (55) and Theresa (54), and her older brother Rudi (22), were found murdered in their house at the exclusive De Zalze golf estate on 27 January. Marli’s brother Henri (20) also survived the attack.

Ben Rootman, spokesperson for the family, told News24, “Marli’s condition is stable and she’s making good progress; she can move both sides of her body. She isn’t talking yet but she’s showing emotions and recognises close members of her family in photographs. “The family is deeply grateful for the excellent work the medical and support teams are doing. They realise that her recovery is a drawn-out process and that all attention is now being focused on this.” Rootman declined to comment on reports that Henri is addicted to drugs and that injuries he sustained were self inflicted.

“The South African police are investigating the case and any inquiries in this regard should be directed at them.”

Meanwhile Marli’s friends and fellow learners at Somerset College have started a memory tree for her.

According to Netwerk24, her friends are writing messages to her, which are sent to the hospital where she’s recovering every week.
