Meet Jodi Picoult

The American bestselling author will be our guest at two fabulous reader events.

Did you know that there are an estimated 40 million books by Jodi Picoult in print worldwide? Her latest, Leaving Time, is her 24th novel and it’s sure to strike a chord with her South African fans.

When we chatted to the bestselling author early last year she’d already started plotting out the novel and told us it would be her first to have an SA connection. And she’s kept her promise – her latest offering, which hits the shelves here this month, is bound to resonate with locals because it has some flashback scenes that play out at the Addo Elephant Park near Port Elizabeth.

And Jodi has another treat in store for SA readers – she’ll be back in SA in January for another tour and will be our guest at two exciting reader events in Cape Town on 20 January and Johannesburg on 23 January. YOU Books editor Jane Vorster will quiz her about her latest book which saw her travelling to Botswana to learn more about Africa’s elephants.

The much-loved author will also share details about her writing habits and how she comes up with the ideas for her riveting novels. Her latest offering, which hits the shelves this month, focuses on 13-year-old Jenna Metcalf and her search for her mother, Alice, an elephant researcher who disappeared a decade earlier in the wake of a tragic accident at her New England sanctuary for former circus/zoo elephants. True to form, as soon as the book was released in America it shot right to the top of the bestseller lists.

The novel has been earning her high praise for its sensitive and thought-provoking examination of the mother-daughter relationship, be it elephant or human, and the idea that those we can’t forget are never truly gone.

Jodi began her writing career in 1992 with Songs of the Humpback Whale but it was her 11th novel, My Sister’s Keeper, that cemented her worldwide fame after it was made into a movie starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin. Since then Jodi has consistently managed to churn out books that pack a punch, never shying away from delving into uncomfortable social issues. We’ll be pulling out all the stops to ensure our two evening events with her are something readers will be talking about for a long time. Guests will be treated to drinks, delicious canapés and will each receive a special YOU goodie bag. Plus Jodi’s books will be on sale at a special discount and fans can have them signed by the author.
