"She is working not only to make a difference in the lives of her family, but also in her community”

“In my 30 years at Sanlam, I’ve never met such an inspirational client, who has the spirit to overcome so much, while being so selfless. She is working not only to make a difference in the lives of her family, but also in her community.” These are the words of Mavis Jansen Arendsen, a Sanlam Financial Adviser speaking about her new client: Tshegofatso Moselakgomo’s.

Tshego is. “We’re in the business of the future” says the first winner of Sanlam’s inspirational National Start Something Day competition Senior Brand Manager, Kirby Gordon.

“Insurances, investments… they’re all about making sure that your tomorrow is as bright as it can be. That’s what inspired the National Start Something Day campaign. We saw that people have all these dreams, but they just need a reason to get them started!”

In her entry Tshego pledged to start saving for her younger sister’s education. While she was still at school, Tshego, her younger sister, and their little brother were orphaned and left to fend for themselves. A community member finally intervened after seeing Tshego trying to balance her school work while caring for the young ones, and had the children placed in an orphanage in Rustenburg.

Tshego was lucky enough to qualify for a bursary to study a bachelor of commerce (accounting) at the University of Johannesburg, but wants to make sure that her sister and brother get the same opportunities in life.

“She’s an absolute inspiration” says Gordon. “The stories we see are so inspiring, but this young lady was a complete stand-out winner”.

And win she did! Tshego was awarded R25 000 which she placed into a Sanlam education savings plan for her sister on the advice of Arendsen. Tshego has shown she understands the value of education, and the importance of taking steps to save for it.”

Sanlam is giving away a total of R200 000 as part of National Start Something Day which will be on the 7th of September. The competition is open to all South Africans and entries can be made at www.startsomethingday.co.za.
