After months of stringent selection processes, Mr South Africa 2013 was crowned during a star-studded event last night, 7 November, at Gold Reef City’s Lyric theatre, in Johannesburg.

John Owen is the new titleholder after judges during the final event awarded him the laurels. He was chosen out of 12 finalists from all over the country. The second runner-up is 26-year-old Matthew Fincham from Pretoria and third another from Pretoria, 28-year-old Jacques Fagan.

Owens describes his win as a dream come true. “I was actually bullied into taking part in Mr SA but in the end it completely changed my life. I saw that it was more than just a beauty contest. It’s a doorway to so many opportunities, not only on a personal level but it also provides one with the platform to actively make a contribution to the country at large,” says the 30-year-old, also from Pretoria.

He believes the winner of Mr SA should really use the brand to create awareness about important issues and challenges in life. John has for the past few years worked for one of the biggest private property trusts in South Africa and has since 2006 been among its top five salespeople in Africa.

He maintains a healthy lifestyle and has taken up golf as a hobby. He’s also actively involved in charity work for children through the Africa Blessings project.

The red-carpet event was attended by some of the country’s top celebrities, personalities, designers and the media. The judges included former actress and businesswoman Annie Malan, writer and socialite Loui Fish, fashion designer Paledi Segapo and singer and writer Andries Hendrik Potgieter.
