Who would have guessed the brains behind the no-make-up selfie phenomenon which is sweeping across social media for cancer awareness would be a teenage mom?

The young mother-of-one, Fiona Cunningham (18), encouraged people to post no-make-up selfies while donating money to Cancer Research UK.

She was inspired by Vertigo actress Kim Novak (81) when she recently appeared bare-faced at the Oscars.

'I was amazed at the response from people around the world'

“The no-make-up selfie craze really captured my imagination and I was amazed at the response from people around the world and just thought how great it would be if it could be done for charity,” Fiona says.

Just a few days after she created a Facebook page she received a staggering 260 000  likes from supporters across the world and later Cancer Research UK proudly announced it had received more than  R35 million in donations as a direct result of the no-make-up selfie campaign.

“Initially I was just going to try and raise awareness for breast cancer, but it just became all cancer and that is even beter.”
