Melanie on Christmas: 'It’s going to be very sad and difficult'

2015 has been an incredibly difficult year for the 7de Laan actress – and Christmas just won't be the same.

For popular 7de Laan actress Melanie du Bois, Christmas has always been a huge family celebration.

But while there will be the usual festivity with the big meal and exchanging of presents this year, it won’t be a happy occasion.

Earlier this year, Melanie lost her beloved nephew Michael, and her older sister (Michael’s mom) Lucia Wilson – both to suicides.

“It’s been a really tough year,” says Melanie, who also contemplated suicide following the death of her loved ones.

She’s since been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and entered an in-patient treatment facility earlier this year, to learn how to cope with her condition and depression.

While she’s on the road to recovery, Melanie admits that some days are harder than others.

“I’m not looking forward to Christmas; it’s going to be very sad and difficult, but we’ve all got to get through it.”

Her family has always had big festive celebrations, with lots of food and music and celebrations.

She says it will be easier to share the pain as her entire family will be together during Christmas, to offer each other comfort.

“We’re going to try to keep things as normal as possible.”

She says it’s important to maintain some sort of tradition, especially for her daughter Roxy (9), who’s had a difficult time coping with the deaths of her family members.

“She told me that all she wants for Christmas is a doll that says: 'Mommy, I love you.' And she’s asked for money to buy gifts for other children who are less fortunate; that’s something I’m very proud of.”
