Melissa Rivers was “making deals” with her mother as she lay in a coma.

The TV producer's mum, legendary comic Joan Rivers, passed away in September last year after complications from a routine medical procedure. Melissa was by the 81-year-old’s side throughout her battle for life and even up to the last moment, willed her to wake up.

“You just go cold. You go numb; you can't think,” she told People magazine of the moment when she got the call that Joan had stopped breathing. “I was going, ‘You've got to fight. Don't do this!’ I was just making deals with her. And then at some point you realise, there's no fighting.”

Melissa added that she even climbed into Joan’s hospital bed to be as close to her as possible as the ventilators were turned off and she took her last breath.

The star was regularly joined at her bedside by her 14-year-old son, and Joan’s grandson, Cooper. During her chat with the publication, Melissa admitted the death had hit her boy hard, as Joan was his “partner in crime”. Only now, eight months on does he seem to be returning to his normal self, but the Fashion Police producer knows that Joan will have appreciated their constant presence by her side.

“I was grateful to have had those few days to be able to let go a little bit,” she added. “I tried to make the transition as peaceful and beautiful as she would want it to be.”

Melissa is set to reveal more details of her life with Joan in her new book, The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation, which will be released next month.
