At 60 Meryl Streep is in a league of her own. A string of recent successful mainstream movies, a cover shoot for Vanity Fair magazine, nominations galore and being hailed as a sex bomb leave no doubt she’s on top of her game.

Her latest movie, It’s Complicated – currently on the local circuit – has been pulling in the crowds. She stars opposite Alec Baldwin in the light-hearted romp and they’ve been praised for their “effervescent chemistry”.

In short, she’s sizzling – and she can hardly believe it herself. “It’s incredible,” she says.

And the accolades just keep coming. This year she broke the record for the most Oscar nominations – 16 – when she was up for a Best Actress gong for her role in the delightful Julie & Julia. She also hit the record books at the Golden Globes when she was nominated for her 25th award for the same movie.

Meryl’s first big screen role was in 1977’s Julia and was followed by The Deer Hunter, Out of Africa, Sophie’s Choice and The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Now, 33 years and 48 films later, she’s still going strong.

She is comfortable with where she is – and that includes her looks. “I wasted so many years thinking I wasn’t pretty enough,” she says. “Now I’m enjoying the tatters of what’s left and I’m very happy.”

She recalls trying out for a lead role in King Kong and the director saying to his son, “She’s ugly. Why did you bring me this thing?”

She and sculptor Don Gummer, whom she knew from her Yale days, have been happily married for more than 30 years. They have four children, Henry (31), Mamie (27), Grace (24) and Louisa (19).

“I’m just very grateful to be alive. Very f***ing grateful. I’m out there on behalf of all the old broads and I’m proud to be there.”
