Fans of these two football superstars can give endless lists of why one is better than the other. And the latest batch of awards can give them more to work with.

Desktop Cristiano Ronaldo was selected the Most Valuable Player in the hotly contested Spanish soccer league but Lionel Messi won the Player of the Year and Best Attacker. They’re both up for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award this year and by all accounts it will be a close race. The Ballon d’Or is a “Golden Ball” award given annually to the player who is considered to have performed the best in the previous year.

'They don't have the same attitude and that gives life to football'

Voting for the awards was recently controversially extended by Fifa. UEFA president Michael Platini joked it was done to ease the tension between Fifa president Sepp Blatter and Ronaldo.

Weeks before Blatter had told the Oxford University students he prefers Argentine Messi over Ronaldo.

According to Blatter, Messi is popular because he is kind. “He's a kind man, a good boy. That's what makes him so popular, and naturally he'll always get a lot of votes because he plays well and scores goal.”

Messi has been the Ballon D’Or recipient since the introduction of the award in 2010.

Blatter explained that he and Ronaldo are exceptional players but they are totally different. “Lionel Messi is a good boy that every father and every mother would like to take home. He's a good man, he's very fast, and he's not exuberant, he's playing well.

“The other one [Ronaldo] is something else. He is like a commander on the field of play. This is the other side of football and it's good to have commanders on the field. This is the other side of football and it's good to have commanders on the field.”

“They don't have the same attitude and that gives life to football. One has more expenses for the hairdresser than the other but that doesn't matter.”

The 23-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or award includes Gareth Bale, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Luis Suarez. Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery is a serious contender with Ronaldo and Messi. Journalists, national coaches and captains will vote for the winner of the FIFA Ballon d’Or.

The winners of all of the awards will be revealed at the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala on 13 January 2014.
