Miley Cyrus’ date to the MTV Video Music Awards has been sentenced to six months in jail.

The pop star was accompanied at the 2014 ceremony by 22-year-old transient Jesse Helt, who accepted her award for Video of the Year and read her acceptance speech in a bid to raise awareness for homelessness. Jesse received jail time on Tuesday for violating the terms of his probation in Oregon, according to the New York Post. He was reportedly led away in handcuffs after a hearing during which he asked the judge for leniency, declaring he’d “like to be viewed as a good person, not as a nuisance to society”, the outlet reports.

Jesse received jail time on Tuesday for violating the terms of his probation in Oregon, according to the New York Post.

Jesse was arrested after an attempted break-in at a Salem, Oregon apartment in 2010 and charged with criminal mischief and criminal trespass, Mashable reports.

A warrant was put out for his arrest after he failed to meet with his probation officer and complete community service requirements after moving to Los Angeles, prosecutors said.

Miley reportedly met him at a homeless shelter.

The Wrecking Ball singer has previously lamented that the media botched her attempt to help those in need by focusing on Jesse’s troubled past rather than the issue of homelessness.

She also urged critics to show a little empathy.

"People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included," she tweeted back in August. "I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it. Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?"

Her comments followed days after she tearfully looked on while Jesse recounted his story.

"I’ve survived in shelters all over... Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight," he told millions while accepting Miley’s award.

"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality."
