Mindy Kaling worries her dates expect her to have “11 martinis” and then pass out.

The 35-year-old star appears in The Mindy Project, in which she plays a doctor who struggles to balance her work and home life while looking for love.

Mindy is very different to her character in real life, which sadly many people don’t expect.

'I'm not very much like my character, who is very wild'

“I am dating but one of the challenges I have noticed is that I'm not very much like my character, who is very wild,” she explained to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

“And I think that when I go on dates, there's this expectation that I'm going to have like 11 martinis and like pass out and like spend the night [with them] really soon.”

Mindy often gets the feeling her dates are disappointed by the real her. This is because in everyday life she has no interest in one night stands, joking that there are many reasons why she needs to be at her own home every night.

“Because I have my medications that I have to take at night. I have to be at my house and do my flossing,” she laughed, adding that she doesn’t take anything narcotic “yet”.

Although she enjoys going out with guys, Mindy has previously insisted marriage doesn’t interest her. She used to think life wouldn’t be complete without a husband, but as time has gone on she’s realised that is very far from the truth.

"I don't need marriage," she told Good Housekeeping magazine in January. "I don't need anyone to take care of all my needs and desires. I can take care of them myself now."

Mindy previously dated B.J. Novak, who she co-starred with in the US version of The Office. The pair had a complex romance and although she’s said he broke her heart in the past, they have managed to get through it.

"I'm definitely not in the friends-with-my-exes camp," she explained. "But B.J. has the stamp for life as a friend. My mom loved him. He feels like family.
