The woman's security guard boyfriend is believed to have left his gun in the back seat of the car.

A young mother is dead after she was shot in the back while driving – by her own child.

The child was in the back seat of a car while 26-year-old Patrice Price was driving on a motorway in Milwaukee in the US on Tuesday.

According to WISN-TV, André Price said his daughter was accidentally shot dead by her two-year-old son.

Patrice's mother, who was sitting in the front seat of the car with Patrice's one-year-old son, said she heard a loud popping noise. Patrice turned to her and said, "Momma, don't let me die."

Patrice’ boyfriend is a security guard and it’s believed he left his gun in the car by accident.

Another relative told WISN 12 News that the mother of three knew the firearm was there. Price's mother warned her daughter it was dangerous, the relative added, but Patrice had said she shouldn't worry; the safety was on.

Eyewitnesses said they knew something was wrong when they watched the blue four-door car swerve to the side of the road.

Kourtney Blevins told Fox 6 News that people were panicky and wanted to help. “I know there’s some little boys down there that they put in a police car. It was two little boys it looked like, so some kids were involved unfortunately,” she said.

André Price bsaid it was a freak accident that the family is still grappling to make sense of.

"This little girl right here meant everything in the world to me," he said. "And I lost the other half of my heart."

Patrice isn’t the first person to be shot by a child in a car. Jamie Gilt, a gun activist from Jacksonville in Florida, was shot in March this year by her four-year-old son who found a gun on the back seat her car. Jamie survived the shooting.
