Mom's winter soup

"I grew up with this soup. When my mom made it I knew winter had arrived.”

Serves 6-8

Preparation time: 20 min

Cooking time: 1½ hours

500 g brown lentils

1 can (410 g) chopped tomatoes

2 ripe tomatoes, cut into hunks

2 potatoes, cut into chunks

2 onions, roughly chopped

4 carrots, roughly chopped

500 g stewing steak

50 g oxtail soup powder

2 litres cold water

salt and pepper

Rinse the lentils and put them in a large saucepan.

Add all the ingredients except the soup powder, water, salt and pepper.

Dissolve the soup powder in a little of the water and add it to the saucepan with the remaining water.

Bring the soup to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 80 minutes or until done.

Mash the vegetables slightly and season with salt and pepper.
