'Mother of Rooibos' dies aged 86

The woman known as South Africa's "Mother of Rooibos", Dr Annique (Annekie) Theron, died over the weekend died at the age of 86.

The woman known as South Africa's "Mother of Rooibos", Dr Annique (Annekie) Theron, died over the weekend died at the age of 86.

"It is with deep regret and sadness that we inform you of the passing of our founding member," her beauty company Annique said in a statement on Facebook.

"We offer our sincere condolences to her family and everyone who loves her as much as we do."

There are no further details about her death at the moment.

Annekie – called Anna by friends and family – founded Annique, a beauty company based on the purported healing properties of rooibos, after finding that feeding her colicky baby rooibos tea instead of milk helped ease her symptoms.

Now, 15 000 consultants sell over 200 products made by her company, which are experted to 18 countries around the world.

Annekie is survived by her four children, Lorinda, Suzette, Henk and Marius.
