This is a true story. No, really! If you don’t believe me, google it! It’s set in the 1880s in London when a number of women in a "hysterical” condition came knocking on a certain Dr Mortimer Granville’s door for help. The women’s sex-lives were nonexistent – their husbands didn’t provide them with any pleasure or satisfaction and it was driving them crazy.

Initially the good doctor tried to lend a helping hand but the physical demands soon proved too much for him. Then he stumbled upon a brilliant idea – to replace his hand with a machine. Thus the vibrator was born.

This respectfully serious film is an absolute treat. Don’t expect the explicit erotica of Fifty Shades of Grey; the movie examines how the most popular sex toy ever came to be and how it changed the lives of women in the Victorian era and since. It’s never crude, instead treating its subject with respect and sympathy.
