In the end you don’t know whether to laugh, cry or think really hard, because Jeff catches you by surprise.

Rated: 3/5

Human comedy-drama.

With Jason Segel, Ed Helms and Judy Greer.

Directors: Jay and Mark Duplass.

13LD.

Opens 12 October.

This is one of those quirky, slightly rebellious movies that’s hard to categorise. It’s not quite a full-blooded drama, nor is it a hilarious comedy. Perhaps that’s what makes it so charming. There really isn’t another movie to compare it to.

It’s about a geek (who else but Jason Segel?) who lives with his mother (Susan Sarandon). She pushes him to find his own place but he clings to the parental home like mud to a gumboot. Why? Does fate have something in store for him?

It’s this possibility the movie examines. Everything happens for a reason. Jeff must find his purpose and fulfil it. The story starts when someone dials a wrong number and gets through to him. This sets off a chain of events that changes his and his family’s lives.

In the end you don’t know whether to laugh, cry or think really hard, because Jeff catches you by surprise.

Recommended if you enjoy the unexpected.
