So freshly conceived and well-crafted you’ll want to return to it again and again.

Rated: 5/5  2012 90 min 13SV Comedy drama

On a pristine New England island, 12-year-old orphan Sam (Jared Gilman) has escaped from his summer scout camp to fulfil a secret pact with Suzy (Kara Hayward). The somewhat nerdy, troubled teens are pen pals and budding sweethearts, and intend running away to a remote cove populated by rare birds.

When their absence is discovered, an equally quaint bunch of khaki-clad scouts, including the scout master (EDWARD NORTON), Suzy’s eccentric attorney parents (Frances McDormand and Bill Murray) and the local police captain (BRUCE WILLIS) go after them. They’re found, but now Sam’s foster parents won’t have him any more and Social Services (TILDA SWINTON) says he has to return to the orphanage.

This rare gem of a Wes Anderson film deservedly received an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. The rich, human tale that unfolds against the backdrop of a scouts setting is full of surprises, and so freshly conceived and well-crafted you’ll want to return to it again and again.
