Movie of the week: The Box

What’s it about?

An ordinary couple find a wooden box outside their front door. Inside the box is a button. If they push the button someone they don’t know will die. Will they push it?

Who will enjoy it?

Anyone who enjoys the type of junk-food movies you watch late at night armed with a huge box of popcorn. The Box is not a critics’ favourite so if you couldn’t be bothered what the experts think get your wallet out and join the queue for a ticket. There are some scary moments that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up one by one – Frank Langella is minus half his face and it’s a look that can give kids nightmares so think twice before dragging along under-13s. But Cameron Diaz is guaranteed to get the guys hot under the collar – it’s good to see her in a situation so sticky she gets her blonde locks in a bun! Entertaining.

Wait for DVD?

Yes, because you may want to see this flick again and the second time would be nice in the company of friends. The atmosphere is oppressive and tense, the script flirts with the “what if?” plot twist and the movie keeps you guessing right until an ending that’s not as predictable as you might have expected. There’s even a lesson: beware what you wish for, you might get it. Definitely recommended if you like stories reminiscent of Roald Dahl but with a hefty kink in the tail. An enjoyable way to pass the time.
