The most successful film franchise is 50 years old and stronger than ever – the latest James Bond film, Skyfall, earned more than $1,1 billion (R9,9 billion). And it’s deserved because this is high-quality blockbuster filmmaking that takes the traditional elements – crazy villain, beautiful girls – and casts them in a new light.

Daniel Craig, the best Bond since Sean Connery, returns for a third outing but after being shot, he’s past his prime. His boss, M (Judi Dench), puts him back in the field anyway to track down creepy cyber-terrorist Silva (an almost unrecognisable Javier Bardem) who’s stolen valuable data.

This is Craig’s wittiest Bond and there are playful references to classic 007 moments, and new twists on old characters such as Ben Whishaw’s nerdy Q. Thanks to director Sam Mendes’ fresh approach and an intelligent script that focuses on M and Bond’s mother-son relationship as well as Bond’s little-known background, 007 is as entertaining as ever.
